LANDBOARD

A fusion between surfing, stand up paddle boarding and skateboarding, land paddleboarding gives you a great workout combined with skill and physical coordination.

Nor’easters, macro-scale storms along the upper East Coast of the United States and Atlantic Canada, can make surfing dangerous in the autumn. But, Jerry and Trevor, from Virginia Beach, are ready to take to the land with their Hammerhead Paddle Skate Boards and Baendit Sunglasses.

The boards have a clever design, similar to a hammerhead shark, to help keep the paddle away from the skateboard wheels. Hammerhead Paddle skateboards are great for any of your local paved landscapes like schools, city parks, biking paths, parking lots and even your very own neighborhood.

Plan to burn between 550-650 calories per hour. Loren Sisson, a W.I.T.S Level III personal trainer and Anytime Fitness franchise owner, recommends Hammerhead Land Paddleboards as an alternative to routine cardiovascular exercises and for its great total body strength training benefits.

BICYCLE

Take to the road this fall season and tour God’s great outdoors for vigorous cardio and mental refreshment. While a lightweight custom-built bike will give you peak performance for your ride, just about any bike will do. The only thing that is a real requirement is a good fitting helmet. The shades are optional, but with a sleek look and precision fit, they really do enhance your road trip.

Lieutenant Jeff Kerr of the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office enjoys biking long distances. He can easily cover 50 miles or more in one autumn ride. If bicycling is new for you, start with shorter distances and build, as you grow stronger.

Kerr takes to the roads weekly with a local group that travels in smaller groups organized by strength, speed and distance to be covered.  Look for bicycling groups that you can join in your area. There are even bicycling groups like IC3 where the everyday engagement can include faith-filled conversations and relationships.

Jeff loves to get outside and bike in the colorful autumn shades. There is a greater motivation than just the beauty and the freedom of bicycling. He has Multiple Sclerosis. He views his bike as a gift from God. The regular exercise is more than just great physical therapy it gives him alone time with God.

PLAYGROUND

Take some time this coming weekend and go exploring. Chances are you’ll find a church-based or public playground — maybe several. What’s more, if you haven’t been to one in a while you may find that today’s playgrounds can often have some nice equipment designed with features that really do pack a lot of fun, creativity and potential for a great workout. They’re durable enough for adults. A child is all you need if you feel like you need a license to play.

The autumn provides for additional ways to have fun. A pumpkin can serve as a freshly harvested kettle bell or medicine ball. A pile of freshly raked leaves engages the imagination, which in turn can engage a wider range of muscles and movements. A playground can be a top-rated family fitness facility. Leave your inhibitions behind, focus on the fellowship and celebrate the joy, peace and provision that God has given you.

Expand the opportunities by inviting friends, neighbors or older adults that haven’t had a chance to get outside and be with others. Kick it up a notch by packing a simply but nutritious picnic lunch. Take it one step further with a big blanket. Lay back together to rest, read and discuss a few favorite Bible verses, share in conversation or simply listen and take in your amazing outdoor surroundings.

ZIP LINE AND ADVENTURE TRAILS

Ready to climb a little higher, swing a little wider and fly a whole lot faster? Go ahead and jump! Brent and Jesse wear their favorite Baendit shades when they Go Ape. These brands of adventure course and others like it are found throughout the country and combine treetop thrills with incredible safety features.

Are you afraid of heights? That’s the idea. This is an outdoor activity designed to build on teamwork and strengthen your confidence. This is a fun way to learn new skills, develop your physical strength by combining moves you may have never done before and release your spirit in different ways. It is an ideal way to explore the beauty of the autumn season and also discover aspects of you that you may have not known existed. The adventure is found both in the outdoor thrills and the inner discovery.

Most people can do this. So, don’t limit yourself based upon your perceived weight, age or ability. Instructors and guides outfit you with the proper gear, give you the training and keep an eye on you. Graduate from this and you may next want to try some rappelling, rock climbing or other more advanced adventure sports.  Need some inspiration?  Read Shout! Outdoor Lifestyle Magazine.

REST

Finally, autumn is a splendid season to take time to simply relax and rest.  The cooler temperatures are still warmed by the lower angle sun, so taking a break outside to read a book can be just the thing after a workout or busy week. There are often less insects to bother you and you may find there are less people as well.

Rest is important for physical recovery and spiritual refreshment.  Look in the December 2015/January 2016 issue of Faith & Fitness Magazine as we focus on the theme Pause/Play. We’ll discuss the important role rest plays in living a fit lifestyle.
