Worship Weekend – Shenandoah: Companionship With God

By Brad Bloom

WHAT IS A WORSHIP WEEKEND?
If you’re visualizing a group of 30 energetic teenagers doing a church lock-in all weekend long singing every Christian praise song known to man then think again. That may be the classic youth group experience but this Worship Weekend is all about getting alone with God.

Your day retreat at Shenandoah National Park in Virginia begins Saturday morning, October 6. The Worship Weekend is designed to give you a generous amount of solitary time. However, registration is limited to assure a small group experience for gathered times of conversation and eating.

A RELAXED SCHEDULE – HOW TO PLAN
– The focus of this one-day mountaintop retreat is for you to take time to be alone with God. The agenda for the day reflected that solitary purpose. We developed a modest schedule to facilitate your sabbatical needs and goals and minimize distractions.
9:30 a.m. – Arrive at the Big Meadows Resort Dining Room for breakfast. For those who chose to arrive the night before, hotel reservations can be made at the park hotels or in the nearby towns of Charlottesville, Waynesboro or Harrisonburg.

After breakfast we’ll gather and you’ll receive your copy of the Jan Johnson book Living In The Companionship Of God a guide to personal retreat. We’ll take a brief time next to a warm fireplace to discuss how to make the most of your day retreat. After this time of conversation and prayer you’ll be free to pursue your own morning retreat or join in a morning walk along a Blue Ridge mountain trail with the group.

12 noon – Gather back at the resort for lunch. You can bring your own food or select from their hotel lunch menu. After lunch there will be a short time of sharing followed by an afternoon group walk through Whiteoak Canyon or more solitary time in the wide open area of Big Meadows or a mountain vista along a high ridge trail.

4:30 p.m. To conclude the day everyone will gather back at the resort lodge area to share day retreat experiences and pray.

Fall season temperatures and conditions can range from pleasantly warm to quite chilly. Plan to dress accordingly. A day pack is handy for removing or adding layered clothing, carrying water and a Bible along with a recommended small journal for your own personal notes.

SAFETY DETAILS – We will have available basic first aid for minor scratches, cuts, etc. Wear appropriate shoes for hiking. Bring rain apparel. Cell phone service is limited in the national park.

EXPENSES – There is no fee for the event. Participants are responsible for their own expenses. There is a $15 entrance fee into the park. Participants are responsible for their own food, lodging, and travel expenses.
